A little over 20 years ago I began to pursue wildland firefighting as part of my career never thinking that it would be my full-time career. I got it in my blood though, and history unfolds... I, like most who have made this choice, live it. It is not a job or even a career - it is a lifestyle. Shortly after I started we lost 14 firefighters on the South Canyon Fire on Storm King Mt. on July 6, 1994. That has stuck with me heavily from the start. Last year, on June 30 was the loss of the Granite Mt. Shots on Yarnell Hill. Many of us, even those of us that were nowhere near that fire, are still reeling. There are many,too many, that have given all. Please pause next week to give a tip of the hat and say a prayer for their families. Most all of us will be standing down to review the lessons learned, revisit the 10 Fire Orders, and recalibrate to insure we are approaching the risk with skill.
