A little over a year ago Mohammed Merah followed up his slaying of French soldiers, with an attack on Jewish school children in Toulouse. I suspect that his actions were not only a screwed up response to events in Palestine but were shaped, in some part, by the myth that the Wests imperial wars are somehow Jewish in origin and design. This has been around in some form since 2001. Its there when people talk about the neo-cons, and just happen to real off a list of those American right-wingers with the most Jewish sounding names. Sometimes it is implicit in the half-baked idea the Iraq war was primarily a war for Israel, as though that were more important to Americas strategic thinking than the countrys huge oil reserves, and its massive border with the Saudi Dictatorship. And some sometimes it takes the form of more explicitly racist, and more explicitly bonkers, conspiracy theorising. Wherever we encounter this myth, and whatever form it takes, we need to be ready to challenge it with a proper analysis of imperialism.
