A little poem I wrote in light of the horrific attacks in Canadas heart and soul on Wednesday, October 22nd, 2014, 10 am - 4 pm EST I am free, strong and democratic I do not condone the evil or erratic I am a people with smiles and glee That does not mean I do not stand for thee I am a mother, a child, a father and more I am a place where the dreams of my citizens rise and soar I am a land of hills and valleys, peaks and troughs I am a nation where the snow sometimes falls enough I am dynamic and flowing, from static I am free, strong and democratic I am the warm hug of a mother, and the harsh discipline of a father I am the smiles and laughs of the sisters and the brothers I am the tears of happiness and sadness too I am the subzero winters, hot summers and the falling of leaves that ensues I am the hop in your step and the step in your hop I am the motivation that does not let you stop I am the forces that keep you safe, sound, and asleep without a fear I am the men and women who have fallen so you could rise year after year I am the letters that were sent to the soldiers in the trenches I am the policies that keep you sane, no where near frantic I am free, strong, and democratic When I am attacked, the soul of my citizens is enraged The willingness to uncover the truth and the hunt for justice is engaged The forces of my nation convene to protect without a second thought Each and every heart goes out to the fallen, injured and those who fought I may be peaceful and loving but I am not weak If you attack me, it is not revenge that I seek But understand I will not be intimidated, shook, or brought to my knees As the smoke clears and the sounds of gun shots fade The reality of the situation, however grim, sense of it is made We dust our shoulders and pull up our socks and move on We are a loving people, a caring people but bygones are not bygones The flag we salute is red and white White because we are free and red because we have not forgotten to fight We are people of realism and reality, not drama or dramatic I am free, strong, and democratic.
