A little post for our music enthusiasts who like their tunes steeped in Cold War mythos. Here we have the album Der Kalte Krieg (The Cold War) by the German group Welle Erdball. Welle Erdball have been around for many, many years, being the progenitors of the bitpop/chiptune/etc. type of electronic music. Their signature style is incorporating the Commodore 64 into their songs. They are an interesting, retro group - combining fashion and technologies from the 50s to the early 90s. Extremely kitsch. They do quite a few concept album, Die Wunderwelt Der Technik still being their best in my humble opinion. As you can guess, Der Kalte Krieg is a concept album about The Cold War. Not all the songs on the album seem to 100% fit the theme, but its still a pretty darn good album. Take a gander at the picture, Ive tried to show off all facets of the packing. An infamous red phone, a nuclear explosion going off, two of the members holding pistols dressed to the nines (note - everyone in the band always dressed retro-nice-pinupey). The album is book ended by two skits. Unfortunately, my German is terrible. The first track has some folks listening to a radio broadcast before their door is exploded open and a gun fight ensues. The final track, I truly have no idea what is going on - but there is someone getting tortured by a dentist drill, so I must think some Marathon Man going on. ANYWHO - the first REAL music track on the album is an 8-bit rendition of the James Bond theme! Its not the greatest cover of the iconic song, but its definitely interesting. The best track on the album is Kabinett, a retelling of the infamous German silent film The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari. Its catchy (and in English!), but its an example of a song that doesnt quite fit in with the Cold War concept of the album. Another song to highlight is Starfighter F-104S which is actually a reworking of their song Starfighter F-104G. The new version (104S) actually pales in comparison to the much superior, awesomely realized original (104G). However, this is a definite Cold War song. Germany had a hate-hate relationship with this aircraft, because they were made so bad and so many pilots lost their lives in it. The song also makes me think of the MST3K episode of The Starfighters, a guilty pleasure of mine. Anywho, nearly the entire album has been uploaded to youtube in some capacity.
