A little story if you can be bothered to spare a minute... I went - TopicsExpress

A little story if you can be bothered to spare a minute... I went to an all-boys military style boarding school near London, graduating in 1990. The school was called Gordon Boys School (now Gordons School). It was named after General Charles George Gordon, on the insistence of Queen Victoria in 1885 after General Gordon was killed in Khartoum, Sudan. According to the history books in the UK, and especially my old school, General Gordon is seen as a hero who died in service to Queen and country. Fast forward a few years and I ended up teaching at maz international school here in Petaling Jaya, Malaysia starting in 1997. I had never met anybody from Sudan before, and suddenly I was teaching many Sudanese kids in my classes. How bizarre. For the last 17 years I have been teaching students from Sudan, lovely all of them. Their version of history is quite different. The Mahdi (Muhammad Ahmad), leader of the Sudanese freedom fighters (British called them rebels), is seen as a hero in Sudan for defeating the British colonialists and invaders. They were actually fighting a Jihad or holy war to free their homeland. The Mahdi actually gave orders for his men to capture General Gordon alive, but he was disobeyed. In the heat of battle, things dont always go to plan. If he had been captured alive, my old school would not exist. So you see, there are always two sides to a story, and history is written by the victors. Two days after General Gordon was killed, a relief force arrived (too late) and you can imagine the rest. It would not have been pretty. Some of my old mates were in Khartoum House (all the houses in my old school were named after significant places or events or people in General Gordons life). Pictured here are just some of the current generation of Sudanese students at my school here in Malaysia. They all come from Khartoum. I am pretty sure that a few of them have forefathers who fought for the Mahdi against General Gordon and the British occupying forces. Isnt life strange?
