A little suggestion for Andrew: Tax We live in the land of de-regulation and self-regulation, where the lives of miners, forestry workers, any workers, are worth less than an extra dollar of profit. It is hardly surprising then to find that our richest citizens consider taxes as optional extras. They employ clever accountants to ensure that they self-regulate their outgoings to the Government to the bare minimum. Each year we receive news from the IRD similar to that reported by TV One news on 1/12/14, ‘Inland Revenue monitors 200 New Zealanders worth more than $50 million each. Yet 46.5% of those multi-millionaires earn less than $70,000 a year, meaning they avoid paying the top income tax rate.’ Forget about campaigning on Capital Gains, Robin Hood, or increased higher income taxes, until you have squeezed out every last dollar due from the current taxes. Estimates are that we are missing out on between $1 billion and $6 billion of revenue each year. Please hire two or three senior tax accountants to educate Grant Robertson how to stamp out tax evasion and tax avoidance by re-writing and simplifying the current tax laws, and let those measures be the campaign. As William E. Simon (American Public Servant, Born 1927) is supposed to have said, “The nation should have a tax system that looks like someone designed it on purpose.” Changes to structure can wait for a later battle, as Right wing parties can hardly argue against policies they have promised for years. They cannot scare middle-New Zealand that they will be paying more, even with the help of the media, since the average citizen already pays via PAYE and has little room to avoid paying their fair share. - Nick W
