A little trick that I just learned My first galga, Isa, spoiled - TopicsExpress

A little trick that I just learned My first galga, Isa, spoiled me to no end. When I adopted her 15 years ago, she was 6 years old, a calm, gentle soul who was about perfect. She came in to our house, found the couch and that was it. Turned out to be the perfect meet and greet dog and I found myself adopting more galgos. Soon I found out how spoiled I was, the moment I adopted my first really young Spanish rescue. And that was the moment I decided basic behavior classes weren’t so bad. I have enjoyed taking my new additions to classes ever since. For 13 years now. And every time one of our SAGEhounds goes to a forever home, I suggest taking a few classes. The one on one time during classes will build a bond between you and your dog and I always tell people that even after this many years, I learn something new every time. Recently I have started taking Sami to classes and again I am learning new things. One trick I would like to share, it is working out wonderfully for Sami and me. Sami is only 16 months old and her attention is everywhere but with me. So much to see and discover. And I find myself tripping over her during walks a lot, she is so fast and has zig-zagging down to a Tee. She is also very food motivated and smart. Sooooo, here is the trick to keep her on one side and concentrated on my. Starting out with tons of treats, we start walking. Treats in hand, tapping the seam of my jeans. Tap, treat, tap, treat. A miracle happened, she started looking at the place I tapped. Next step was, tapping the seam, my shoulder, the seam and then treat. Wow, I still had her attention… We can walk for quite a while now, her attention is still at the tapping spot. The magical spot where the treats seem to come from. And she stays at that side. She is almost looking like those border collies that I see on tv, lovingly looking at their owners, head resting against their owners legs. LOL, I am so not falling for that one anymore, I know how they did that. But I learned a new trick, and it helps Sami concentrating on me, which is a huge help.
