A little while back, I witnessed a policeman hack a hole into the tire of a rickshaw, just because the puller was a little too slow to move away from the main road, and was blocking the signal. He was a little old man, bending from his own weight, and from the weight a cosmos full of responsibilities pressing down on him. Now, we can take two routes in order to properly ascertain the ramifications of such an incident. On one side, we can raise a hue and cry - and condemn such an utterly disgraceful act and lament at the loss of humanity. We can nod our heads, and spurn at it. We can clamor about the absolute horrific incident and demand change. On the other, we can justify the action of the policeman, regardless of the consequence of the whole act. We can simply say how a little force is a necessity in the face of adversity. You know what? Think on it. I am sure that you, forever, have supported the second group of people, even though your logic creates an enigma and asks you to understand the first (which you will say that you support, albeit privately). Think on it. Think about how we are all spineless; and how the weight that we were meant to carry is now on the back of the unprivileged. Think while you know the rest of the story: The moment his tire was shredded, he simply let out a small whimper as the seeming complete weight of the galactic macrocosm suddenly precipitated into the sweat glands of his back. He was at a loss; unable to decide what to do. What could he do anyway? Complain against the absolute higher authority? Quetch at the wrong being committed against him? Scorn in the face of sure retaliation? Resist the wrong? No. He had no right to do any of those. He could only whimper. Because our sick social structure has justified the use of violence. Our political leaders publicly defend violence in the name of democracy, and our lawyers fight with brickbats from inside the high-court. We made him whimper, because we put the weight of the cosmos on him due to the lack of our own spines. We failed him.
