A (long but) worth-it read! So relatable for me - a Pentecostal Christian who grew up in traditional, conservative churches throughout my teenage years (12~18 years old). The first time I worshipped away from my home church in Bethel was in July 2005. I remember telling my parents after the service, I HATE HYMNS! (I am a die-hard Arsenal fan, and I dont even hate Man Utd! But after one service, I HATED HYMNS!) But the Lord slowly changed my heart. I began to UNDERSTAND the DEEPNESS of MANS theology and ENCOUNTER the DEPTHS of CHRISTS love in every line of sweet refrain! And after seven years away from CCM, I can very genuinely tell you now that there are no greater truth-centred and God-glorifying songs than in the melodies and words of these timeless classics! For these songs point to the Cross. They point to the theme of redeeming love. But most importantly, they points to the PERSON: Jesus the Christ! YES!!! Jesus is the point!!! I appreciate and fully respect current and in season songs too! I have learnt so much about comtemporary worship while worshipping back in Bethel for the past two years! I am thankful.
