A long day at the Suffolk County Legislature came to an end at 10pm Tuesday. Among the many bills addressed, the following are highlights: A public hearing was closed on a bill to regulate the sale of puppies and kittens by retailers and breeders. The bill now goes to the Government Operations & Consumer Affairs Committee for a vote. A public hearing on a local law to eliminate automatic pay increases for Suffolk elected officials was closed, sending the bill to the Government Operations Committee for a vote. A public hearing on a law to require certain labeling or warning notification of the dangers of liquid nicotine was closed, sending the bill to the Health Committee for a vote. A local law to require gas stations selling gas with more than a 5% differential between cash and credit prices to electronically warn customers of the price difference, despite the required signage, was tabled...which means put off because it didnt have enough votes to pass. A local law establishing more than twenty requirements for vendors who sell food in some County buildings was also tabled. The bill would dictate the types and quantities of foods that could be sold by vendors and in vending machines, including calorie counts, sugar content, sodium content, fat content, etc. A local law to restrict the length and weight of chains which tether dogs outside and limits the amount of time a dog can be tethered, passed. Millions of dollars of borrowing was approved to construct buildings at Suffolk Community College, repair bridges and roads and purchase a variety of equipment/vehicles. A bill was passed declaring August 7 as Purple Heart Day in Suffolk County. Should you want more information on these or any other County matters, let me know.
