A long time ago, At Emerson Junior High...The back room of a building so old, so unique in many ways. just enough to where a kid my age would never appreciate the fact of history before my young eyes. A tall, slender man, put music into my soul. He was hip to say the least. I sat there on wooden chairs that folded up like a tulip closing itself off for the night. Watching him move back and forth. Youth still flowing from every pore of his being. Music his life. Hippie almost. But never really showed how deep that might have been. One day, we all marched in like you normally did. Some anticipating that 42 minutes or more. Me, wondering what tricks he had to deepen the fact that if I was his age at the time, seeing him and I sitting on the porch drinking a beer and listening to CKLW! I pulled down my wooden seat. He pulls out an album. This wasnt Bob Dylan. It wasnt Cream. It wasnt Simon & Garfunkel. It was the rock opera Jesus Christ Superstar! It was amazing! It was the most perfect thing I had ever heard. It was Mark Deerwester at his best! I remember one or two people having to leave because of their religion. But it didnt bother him. He knew that would happen. He took that chance. He influenced someone like me! Its not how much music you have on your hard drive. Its not the thousands of bands that you can name off the top of your head. Music is depth. Its every heart that breaks. Every tear you cry. Smiles and laughter over words that wont be forgotten. Its a little bit of this. But in the end it will always be a little bit of that! every time I hear that song at the right place, at the right time, I think of Mark. And I thank him! Ill never forget the magic he gave to me!
