A long while ago, when I asked my maternal uncle, in an attempt to better understand my roots, what was the day my grandmother was born, he said, “I don’t seem to remember. I guess when people live, we remember their birth date and when they die, we remember the death date.” That did not sit well with me. I’d rather think of the person on happier days than mourn the sad day. Even as I am aware that time passes by and our memories start to fade, important people who have greatly impacted our lives, should be celebrated even after they are no more, just like we celebrate great leaders’ birthdays. My mum was a diabetic. And I don’t know whether her dislike for something sweet was a result of the control she had to keep on her diet or the fact that she was not particularly fond of sweet as she claimed. But bring white chocolate to the table and she had dibs. Shed give us up for adoption but not give up her share of Toblerone. I always celebrated Mum’s birthday in any way that I could. I remember once she was in Goa and she assured me she would make it in time to celebrate her birthday with me. Forget about the promise she made me, she did not even remember it was her special day. I had taken the leave, I had bought her a cake, so I wished her on the phone and cut it and ate it too :p Today, in between running errands, visiting family and traveling, I had plenty of time to celebrate mum’s birthday in my thoughts throughout. But when I came home, I felt I needed something more. So today’s experiment is inspired by mum’s love for chocolate and spice and the day she was born, one of the most important days in my life. I combined two classic desserts - my favorite alongwith her favorite. Crème Brulee and Cheesecake were infused together and what I got was something fascinating. # I got to use my kitchen torch after years. So between using it for the second time ever and not having felt the need to read the instructions again, I landed up burning a bit of the caramel on the top. But didn’t seem to taste it in the dessert maybe because it was a beautiful crisp top to break and bite into. White Chocolate N Paprika Cheesecake Crème Brulee. Phew! Long title. Happy Birthday to Ma! ^_^
