A los humanos nos da igual para dónde se mueve la cola de un perro. Pero según un estudio publicado en Current Biology, los perros pueden ver la diferencia entre el movimiento a la derecha o a la izquierda. En un trabajo previo, científicos de la Universidad de Trento en Italia demostraron que el movimiento a derecha o izquierda depende de diferentes estados emocionales (a la derecha indica alegría, a la izquierda ansiedad o emociones parecidas). En este último estudio se ha demostrado que los perros perciben tambien el estado de sus congéneres. Cuando un perro veía un video de otro que movía la cola a la izquierda, mostraba signos de ansiedad. Si el movimento cola que veían iba a la derecha, el perro se mantenía relajado. Los científicos no creen que los perros usen deliberadamente el movimiento de su cola para comunicarse, sino que es el reflejo de su cerebro organizado asimétricamente y que los otros perros aprenden a interpretar tales señales. To us humans, all tail wags look alike. But new research published in Current Biology shows that dogs can differentiate between a left-wagging tail and one that wags to the right. Previous work by scientists at the University of Trento in Italy showed that dogs wag to different sides based on their current emotional state (wags to the right indicate happiness, wags to the left show anxiety and similar emotions). In their latest study, these researchers showed that dogs can distinguish between these two types of wags. When a dog was shown a video clip of a left-wagging dog, their heart rates increased and they showed signs of anxiety. When the dog watched a video of a right-wagging dog, the animal stayed totally relaxed. The scientists dont believe the dogs are deliberately communicating via tail wags. Instead, they believe that its a reflection of their asymmetrically organized brains, and other dogs have learned to interpret these signals.
