A lot has been going on in the domestic scene lately. Heres a quick roundup: - As things stand, Bangladesh will not have to play in the first round of the 2018 FIFA World Cup qualification in the AFC zone. If the first round fixtures are not postponed, Bangladesh will automatically qualify for the second round on the basis of being 34th in the 46-team AFC zone in the latest FIFA ranking for January. The second round will have 40 teams divided into eight groups of five each, meaning Bangladesh will play at least eight matches (home and away) during that period. Theres also a good chance of Japan or Australia or any other top team of the AFC zone coming to Bangladesh for the away fixture if they are drawn together. - Bangabandhu Gold Cup will kick off on January 29. Bangladesh are drawn in Group A along with Malaysia and Sri Lanka while Group B consists of Singapore, Bahrain and Thailand. Bangladesh will face Malaysia in the opening match in Sylhet. The matches will be live on Channel 9. You can find the full fixture list here: https://facebook/plaantik/photos/a.251297818235823.71348.250937974938474/902588273106771/?type=1&theater - The national team lost 2-0 to Abahani at BKSP today in a practice match. Saiful Bari Titu is currently in charge of the side, but former coach Lodewijk de Kruif is expected to arrive soon to take over for the Gold Cup. His arrival has been delayed due to the death of his father. - Theres a chance Diego Maradona may visit Bangladesh soon. To cut a long story short, Celebrity Management Group, the Kolkata-based sports event management company which previously brought Maradona to Kolkata and also helped BFF organize the friendly between Argentina and Nigeria in 2011, proposed an eight-team ISL-like franchise league to BFF a few weeks ago. According to the proposal, the league will feature eight franchisees - Dhaka, Chittagong, Barisal, Sylhet, Khulna, Rajshahi, Rangpur and Mymensingh, with Diego Maradona as the chairman of the league committee. BFF has shown interest but said they will hold further talks only if Maradona comes to Bangladesh. CMG officials are set to meet Maradona in Madrid on January 29.
