A lot has been said about the #ALSbucketchallenge, both good and bad. I see far more good than bad in challenging people to take the plunge and/or donate cash to help find a cure for a debilitating condition. What many dont know is that the president of the Horror Writers Association, Mr. Rocky Wood, has ALS, and despite being confined to a wheelchair and limited to communication via only an iPad, manages to run and grow the largest group of horror writers in the world with humor, aplomb, and grace. Hes a hero in the truest sense of the word, and Im proud and honored to know him and be some small part of his life. I was challenged by my dear friend Carter Tony Brent, who has been an amazing and special part of *my* life for the better part of two decades, though we dont get together nearly as often as we both would like. Im donating $100 at alsa, and challenging my favorite authors Joe McKinney and Jonathan Maberry, as well as the inventor of tribbles in the original Star Trek, Mr. David Gerrold. Id also like to issue a challenge to all members of the HWA, to donate and to pass on the challenge. Rocky has our back, its only right that we have his.
