A lot has been said about the mental strength of the Germans when it comes to success in football. Strange as it may sound but it comes with no surprise that many soccer pundits have already written the obituary of Brazil before their semi-final encounter against Germany tonight. Who would have thought that one day Brazil would be touted as the under-dogs in a world cup match, being played in Brazil? If losing the colorful Neymar was a big blow to the Brazilians, then the suspension of the captain, Thiago Silva, ahead of such an encounter was a disaster of the highest proportions! Surely the coach of Brazil has enough experience at this level to understand that having to play against a highly competitive and consistent German national team, without a captain, may prove disastrous for the Brazil nation that is so desperate to maintain their dominance in world football. While these challenges for Brazil may present an opportunity for Germany to run riot as they did when they dismantled Portugal; the Germans would not want to be naïve by disrespecting their opponents. As much as the Germans would love to advance to the final of this year’s world cup and therefore a stand chance of closing the gap between themselves and Brazil, in terms of the country that has won more world cups; they by now should know that beating Brazil in Brazil is more like a dream than a reality. Yes the Germans should find solace in the fact that in as many matches that Brazil has not lost a competitive match in Brazil, it would be because they have never played a competitive match against Germany in Brazil. One thing that I am certain about is the fact that the mental strength of the Germans that we often use to define German football will definitely be tested in tonight’s semi-final match against Brazil.
