A lot of conversations happening around an ArtPrize exhibit addressing Dog Bite-Related Fatalities. We would encourage you to take a moment and review a study done by the National Canine Research Council. Dog bite-related fatalities remain exceedingly rare, though they can attract attention that creates an impression that they are more prevalent than they actually are. Still these deaths are important, so we recommend referring to the most comprehensive multifactorial study of dog bite-related fatalities to date for a full understanding of these tragic incidents and suggested methods of prevention. The study, published in JAVMA in December 2013, identified a significant co-occurrence of multiple potentially preventable factors in most dog bite-related fatalities. The findings reported support the trend in the prevention of dog bites towards multifactorial approaches focusing on improved ownership and husbandry practices, better understanding of dog behavior, education of parents and children regarding safety around dogs, and consistent enforcement of dangerous dog / reckless owner ordinances in communities. Multifaceted approaches to dog bite prevention have been recommended by virtually all previous studies, as well as by organizations such as the CDC and the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA).
