A lot of folks get very paranoid and embarased when their children get head lice and dont want anyone to find out but the fact is that head lice spreads rampant through school systems and, when that happens, the child cannot return until they have been cleared by the County Health Department. You have to also be aware that, if it is going around a school that your child is in, they need to be checked throughly and, if any are found at all, you need to notify the parents of any kids that they may have come into contact at church as well. The tiny eggs that the lice lay are called nits and are extremely difficult to pick out of the roots of the hair without an especially designed comb - hence the term nit picking. After using the special shampoo designed to kill the lice and nits you have to use the special comb to remove all the dead lice and nuts from the hair. Once you do this it is not uncommon for the treatment to have to be done a second time if they get lice again after returning to school. Both of my kids got like at least once when there were massive outbreaks in the middle schools that they were attending. One interesting fact s that African Americans dont get head lice.
