A lot of people are afraid of GMOs (Genetically Modified - TopicsExpress

A lot of people are afraid of GMOs (Genetically Modified Organisms) and I see the argument. Its not natural, so it must be bad! Maybe it is, but from what I understand its not so scary. They arent using crazy chemicals rather they are doing what farmers do: Cross pollinating the fastest growing plants with the biggest and best tasting. Only it is expedited on a molecular level. Like I said, they could be bad, they could be good, I dont know. However a lot of hubbub has been made about the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) requiring foods containing GMOs to be labeled as such. This is common place when any issue arrises: there ought to be a law! Flawed logic. I believe the FDA should not exist in the first place. If food consumers will only buy food with a label then food disturbers have an incentive to put labels on their food. Many argue without the FDA, food and drug distributers may poison, injure or kill us. Is the FDA made up of magical scientists vastly superior to private scientists? And where is their incentive? Government employees are seldom fired. If an FDA scientist makes a mistake, oh well. If a private scientist makes a mistake, his career and livelihood are ruined. The government has nothing to lose, the tax dollars keep coming. Private companies arent guaranteed anything (in a free capitalistic system) so they dont want to poison, injure or kill their customers! Transparency is key in a free market unlike the government which is riddled with secrets. The sale of non-GMO, organic and natural foods has sky rocketed as awareness has increased. I believe in a natural and organic lifestyle, shit my toothpaste is organic! However, I believe government is no means to an end, rather an intrusive, sloppy, expensive and temporary solution. Moral of the story: Government is almost never the answer and almost always makes matters worse.
