A lot of people ask me if I keep my cosplaying a secret from the general public. The answer is no. It’s not a secret and I love sharing what I do to the world. I acknowledge that it’s a strange hobby and that most people don’t get it. But a lot of people don’t get me either and there’s really no difference. I’m always forthcoming to my coworkers and new friends/family about my hobby. Only, I don’t say I’m a ‘cosplayer’, I say that I’m a ‘costumer’. It’s a catch-all that people seem to understand a lot more and don’t have to have explained to them. They get the idea. I’m a nerd and I make costumes. Many are impressed, some don’t understand. It’s cool. I don’t understand people who collect model cars or have to have a pedicure once a week. My whole point is that cosplay is a huge part of me. I spend countless hours sewing. Styling wigs. Taking photos. Traveling. Even now, working with geeklurv, it’s turned into a job for me. This is who I am, what I am. Why should I hide that? I shouldn’t. And I don’t. I know a lot of people hide this side of them because of social stigma. That’s okay too— it doesn’t make you lesser of a person, nor does it make you ashamed of cosplay. Everyone is their own person. I want to share what I can do though, to the world. I enjoy showing people what I’m capable of and I love showing everyone how much I love my fandoms.
