A lovely lady responded to my post on the SK page and asked a question that I believe is on the minds of most people who depend on industries that use animals for human entertainment/use/consumption. What will happen to all of these animals without these industries? For horses, what will happen to the millions of thoroughbreds with the racing industry? I get questioned along these lines a lot, and for anyone who would like to take the time to read my reasoning, for those who get asked the same kind of questions here is my response below - its time for a revolution: ** I must disagree that these animals depend on the industry to survive. That may seem like thats the case now, after many years of breeding for the very purpose of racing. But to be as concise as possible, these animals wouldnt be bred to such staggering and completely unnatural numbers without the industries that demand them. Asking what will happen to the millions of thoroughbreds if they arent within the horse racing industry is a very good question and Im not going to pretend I have the answer. However, it is my belief and reasoning that surely, there can be some alternatives that do not involve just continuing down the line we have been thus far. All industries that profit from animals must control these beings in some way in order to receive the outcome they were bred for: whether its to win races or to produce tender meat, these animals are never really free. Despite all the best intentions and loving carers (which we know isnt always the case) within these industries, these animals are still born and bred for our entertainment/consumption/use and I believe this is fundamentally unjust. What we need is people to be brave enough to call for radical change, to use all of our human intelligence and technological advancements and break away from these old and unnecessary models. I have heard the same reasoning being provided for the countless cows, pigs, sheep and fish that are bred daily to meet the demands of the respective industries they have become products in. Many people ask If we make drastic changes and move away from supporting these industries, what will happen to these animals that we have bred into domestication over thousands of years? To that I say that the animal agricultural industry uses so much land to grow crops in order to feed the animals that they sell as a product in one form or another. On this land, you could have enough room to grow enough food to feed the world and have some room spare to dedicate as land for these animals to live out the rest of their lives without a price tags on their heads. And eventually, without a demand, their wouldnt be a requirement to breed these beings. I know its much more complicated than that, but it is possible and I believe in the intelligence, resourcefulness and love of us humans. I believe we can come up with new, much more intelligent, much more logical, much kinder, much more inclusive and much more loving paradigms. We have created many problems by using animals as commodities. The ethical, economical and environmental impacts are vast, especially when considered within the current accepted parameters people have come to consider as most important: Money & Power. The issues are so huge that it can often seem like there is no alternative, but I firmly believe that each person can make a difference and achieve what most view to be impossible. But it requires a radical shift in perspective. Moving away from what we have been taught to be necessary and being vehicles for radical and unapologetic change. Ideals are not just fluffy concepts we put out into the universe. If we choose to, we can take real, meaningful and world changing action. Over our history many brave and amazing beings have worked tirelessly, quietly, loudly, diligently towards bringing about positive change and stand for these ideals. It is when we start to believe that we cannot help, that we cannot revolutionise how we live on this planet that our future will be very bleak. So what will happen with these animals? Im sure there are many conversations happening right now between many smart people with lots of ideas who need people with resources to help make them happen. But to do that, we need to move away from old doctrines that dont serve us, the animals or our planet and use our brains and hearts to bring about something better.
