A major demand of sectarian outfits is that the state accepts and imposes their version of Shariah law. Its result is that according to South Asia Intelligence Review, 5234 security personnel and 10106 civilians have lost their lives in the sectarian offences in Pakistan since 2003. Although the people of Pakistan hold Islam central to their lives, I doubt they will be grilled should the state decide in implementing such version of Shariah law. The Quaid-e-Azam, Muhammad Ali Jinnah, in his broadcast speech to the people of the United States in February 1948, said: “Islam and its idealism have taught us democracy. It has taught equality of man, justice and fairplay to everybody. We are the inheritors of these glorious traditions and are fully alive to our responsibilities and obligations as framers of the future constitution of Pakistan. In any case Pakistan is not going to be a theoretical state to be ruled by priests with a divine mission.”
