A major opportunity currently exists for the first 3.5 miles of a non-motorized path along a Consumers Energy power line corridor in South Lansing. A major federal grant of $1.1 million for this project has been committed if the City will agree to the local match. These are funds that, if left on the table, will go to other communities for nonmotorized transportation purposes. By tapping into this grant at this time, the City saves itself $260,000 in local match dollars due to this lower match requirement. This past week, the Lansing City Council chose deliberately not to take up a resolution of support for the grant during its meeting by pulling it from the agenda. The time to act is now or these funds will be gone.
