A major stress point for me is that we understand being a Christian means ones identity is bound to a fellowship of Christ-followers whose membership and mission is global. St. Georges has developed important relationships with other Christians in Honduras, The Holy Land, South Africa, Egypt, and Great Britain, bonds that free us from narrow parochialism or denominationalism. We were blessed in 2013 by the visit and new friendship of Canon Andrew White, the Vicar of Bagdad and pastoral leader of St. Georges Church there. What is happening in Iraq is horrific, and while countless Muslims have suffered at the hands of the barbarous movement known as ISIS, we are called to care especially for our Christian brothers and sisters there who are being systematically singled out for persecution. While governments and, frankly, too many church leaders sit passive to this atrocity, we as a parish can do some things. First, pray without ceasing for the church in Iraq, for Christian witness there to all people of that land, and for Canon White and his suffering congregation. But I am also extremely proud that our own congregation raised more than $12,000 for St. Georges, Baghdad, in a special offering on a single Sunday earlier this summer. Those funds are being used for food and relocation costs for some members of the church in Iraq. May Christ have mercy. -Leigh+ (I will add an additional post shortly that includes recent video of Canon White.) cnn/2014/08/07/world/meast/stopping-isis/index.html?hpt=hp_t1
