A man, doing household chores, learns quite a few things about woman, especially the one about her nagging complaint of backache and waist ache. The learning becomes deeper during a period of prolonged absence of his dear house-maker from home. I had been neglecting my bed sheets and pillow covers for over last three months. Last night, when I smelt the bed sheet I felt suffocated with its dust and smell. I took a nocturnal decision to wash all the soiled sheets and covers at one go, the very next morning. The first thing I did, after waking up this morning, was preparing washing detergent soap water in a bucket and dipping four bed sheets and three pillow covers into it. I left it that way for three long hours, during which I did my daily chores of brushing, morning tea, lavatory, facebook etc. Then I sat down for my meditation session. I normally do it for about half an hour. But today I kept sitting longer, although I was being constantly hammered with the disturbing thought of a task in hand-that of washing the clothes. I realized that my habitual lethargy in handling household chores was its cause. I forced myself out of my meditative posture and proceeded to the tiresome bathroom. Two of the bed sheets were single in size, two were double. I decided to pick up the single-sized ones. A lazy fellow chooses the less tasking job first. I am not that lazy though. Had I ben so, I would have chosen the pillow covers first. And then the grinding continued. I went through the entire rigmarole of brushing, rubbing, scrubbing, pounding, dipping, wringing etc etc. Finally, when I completed the washroom chores and tried to stand up, I could not straighten myself up. I could feel a severe ache at my back and waist. In a flash of memory I saw my house-maker going through the entire ordeal day after day in the kitchen, in the washroom, in the corridors. I thought, how lightly we, men folk, take the physical strain related complaints made by our women folk and how casually we look upon their daily household chores !
