A man escaped with cash concealed in a large woman’s handbag following a robbery in Didsbury. At 5.55pm on Saturday 24 May 2014, the offender entered the Fonda clothing store on Wilmslow Road and, posing as a customer, asked to try on a pair of shoes. While the shop assistant was distracted he produced a gun, which he shoved into the woman’s back. He demanded cash and was handed over £89. He then demanded a bag to put the money into and was handed a bright yellow woman’s tote canvas handbag, which had two rectangular front pockets with tan trimming and two tan leather handles. The robber then threatened the worker and left the shop, heading towards School Lane. He is described as black, between 5ft 8in and 5ft 10in tall and in his mid 40s to early 50s and of muscular build. He has high cheek bones, a wide mouth, brown eyes, was clean shaven and spoke with a northern accent. He wore a blue or black ‘beanie’ hat, white t-shirt with beige squares and blue jeans and a light grey jumper that was tied around his waist. He was also wearing a watch on his left wrist that had a large face and that was white with a navy blue trim. Detective Constable Andy Willetts, said: “A well-built man carrying a bright yellow handbag would have cut a memorable figure to anyone who saw him and I am urging those people to come forward. “He put a gun to the back of an innocent shop assistant, leaving her understandably distraught, and it is important if you have any information that you contacted us as soon as possible. “If you saw the offender in the Didsbury area on Saturday afternoon or have information about who this person is please get in touch.” Anyone with information is asked to call police on 0161 856 9945 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
