A man from the north of Pretoria is in intensive care after he was shot in what appears to have been an elaborate scam that resulted in an armed robbery on Wednesday afternoon. Dirk Badenhorst and family friend Anrich van Rensburg were ambushed near Soutpansberg Road, after they had arranged to meet the purported seller of a vehicle at his house. Badenhorst’s daughter, Natasha Heyns said her father had taken about R68 000 in cash along to pay for the Mercedes Benz he intended to buy. Badenhorst originally saw the advert for the vehicle on a popular, free online advertising site. When their vehicle pulled into the driveway of the so-called seller’s security complex, two armed men, one on each side, appeared next to them and demanded the cash. “One of the men then fired his gun, wounding my father in his arm and stomach. The men then walked away with the money,” Heyns said. Van Rensburg said: “We were suspicious from the beginning, because the man kept delaying to meet us and complete the transaction.” The other robber took Van Rensburg’s cellphone and car keys and tried to shoot him as well, but the gun misfired. Badenhorst’s wife Vanessa followed them with her own vehicle, and her purse and car keys were also stolen. Heyns said Badenhorst was in the intensive care unit at Muelmed Hospital. “He underwent surgery for the broken bone in his arm after the shooting, so now we are just waiting for him to get better,” she said.
