A man has been charged after he allegedly assaulted a woman and an officer in Mapoon early Monday morning. Police were called to a disturbance about 2:30am on Red Beach Road and attempted to take a 33-year-old man into custody after he allegedly assaulted a woman at a nearby address. It will be alleged the man then punched a male senior constable and knocked out his two front teeth before fleeing the scene. The officer was initially treated at Weipa Hospital, but has since been flown to Cairns for continuing medical treatment. The woman involved in the assault was also treated at Weipa Hospital. A 33-year-old man has been charged with one count each of grievous bodily harm and assault occasioning bodily harm. He has also been charged with one count of dangerous operation of a vehicle whilst adversely affected in relation to an alleged dangerous driving incident earlier that morning. He is due to appear in Weipa Magistrates Court today.
