A man has been charged with attempted murder following the shooting of two men at a home near Newcastle this morning. Police will allege about 2:20am (Sunday 27 July 2014), a man broke into a house on Coles Street at Jesmond while armed with a rifle. Once inside the premises he allegedly confronted a 30-year-old man who was asleep in a bedroom and fired a number of shots towards him. He is also alleged to have fired a shot at a 21-year-old man who was asleep in the lounge room before fleeing the scene. Police from Newcastle City Local Area Command were called to the premises and conducted a search of the area arresting a 31-year-old man in Croudace Road, Lambton. He was searched and allegedly found in possession of a .22 calibre pump-action rifle and a folding knife. The man was taken to Newcastle City Police Station where he was charged with shoot with intent to murder (x2), special aggravated break and enter and commit serious indictable offence (x2) and possess unregistered firearm. He was refused bail to appear in Newcastle Local Court tomorrow (Monday 28 July 2014). NSW Ambulance Paramedics attended the premises and treated the two injured men before taking them to the John Hunter Hospital. The 21-year-old man had sustained a single gunshot wound to the head and remains on life support and in a critical condition while the older man received treatment for four gunshot wounds to the head and remains in a serious but stable condition. A two-year-old girl and two women, aged 21 and 30, who were also inside the house at the time of the shooting were not injured during the incident.
