A man has been extradited from Queensland and charged over a $600,000 trawler fire at a marina in Coffs Harbour last year. About 12:15am on Friday 3 May 2013, police and fire-fighters were called to the Coffs Harbour Marina following reports that a fishing trawler was on fire. While fire-fighters were attempting to extinguish the blaze, the engine of the vessel started and the trawler moved away from the mooring. Fire-fighters were forced to jump from the vessel which crossed the harbour and collided with a yacht. The trawler continued along the harbour before crashing into rocks while the yacht sank. Detectives from the Marine Area Command conducted investigations into the fire and determined it to be suspicious. Acting on information provided by NSW Police, detectives from Queensland Police Service attended a house in Broadbeach where they arrested the man on Monday 30 June 2014. The 19-year-old man, who was allegedly employed as a deckhand on the trawler, was taken to Southport Watch House where he was charged with an outstanding arrest warrant and bail refused. Yesterday (Tuesday 1 July 2014), detectives from the NSW Police’s Marine Area Command attended Southport Local Court where they were granted permission to extradite the man to NSW. He was then extradited to NSW and taken to Tweed Heads Local Court where he was granted conditional bail to appear in Coffs Harbour Local Court on Monday 21 July 2014.
