A man was caught stealing nshima, Zambia’s staple food, in Lusaka’s Kabanana Site and Service recently, reports Lameck Phiri for Zambia Eye. The woman who refused to reveal her names confronted the intruder who she found sat on her dining table room eating nshima on her dining table without invitation. ”Let us go to the police,” she shouted at the man as the general public watched in dismay while the starved man apologised and pleaded with the woman, ”please forgive me, I am just hungry don’t take me to the police,” the man pleaded. children watch nshima thief after being beaten by the owners The angry woman who resorted to using force by hitting the suspected thief using a stick refused to listen to any apology and continued beating the man for ten minutes until onlookers intervened. She narrated to Zambian Eye that she found a man eating nshima in her kitchen. ”This is not the first time I have found my nshima eaten. Today I have caught him he will learn a lesson,” she said. Witnesses told Zambian Eye the man is not a thief but has no means to feed himself hence resorting to stealing. ”I know the man, he is not a thief but can steal if he has no food because he has no means,” Jonas Mwanza said, a Kabanana resident. The prices of the mealie meal, the product that is used to cook the staple food, in Zambia has remained high despite government negotiations with millers to reduce the price. Economists argue that the Patriotic Front (PF) government has no good agriculture policies pointing out the removal of subsidies on mealie meal as one of the contributing factors to the high prices. Zambia’s cost of living has also gone high due to the weakening of the Kwacha, the local currency, rendering many Zambians failing to sustain themselves and to live in abject poverty. The PF government which has so far been in power for two and a half years shifts the blame of price hikes to the previous MMD government.
