A man was on fire. Not (or not only) in the Springsteenian sense, but actually engulfed in flame. Yet somehow, he didn’t burn, he just flickered and glowed. When the first couple of blasts from the hose seemed to have no impact, people just stopped and stared. Finally (and too late, the man thought wryly) I’ve achieved my ultimate teenaged ambition: for girls to think I’m “hot”. And still, they keep their distance.
