A meeting to review the annual performance of the Emergency and Disasters Management Directorate of the Capital Development Authority (CDA) was held here at CDA Headquarters. Chairman CDA, Maroof Afzal chaired the meeting. On this occasion officers of Emergency and Disasters Management Directorate were also present. The meeting reviewed the annual performance, particularly the fire incidents occurred in different sectors of the Federal Capital and its timely control through effective measures. On this occasion, Chairman CDA, Maroof Afzal was apprised that 1625 fire cases in different areas of the city were reported in Emergency and Disasters Management Directorate during the year 2014, which were timely responded to avoid any major untoward fire incident. Maximum fire incident calls i.e. 266 calls have been received during the month of June, 2014. These fire incidents calls include electric fire, house fire, industries fire, vehicle fire, LPG / gas and liquid fire, commercial area fire, canteen / shop fire, green area fire, public buildings fire, rescue / buildings fire and garbage fire incidents. While minimum fire calls i.e. 82 calls have been received during the month of April, 2014. Chairman CDA was further apprised that most of the fire incidents were reported in the green areas of Islamabad, which were 411 in number. While only 12 fire calls have been received in industrial area, which were minimum in number. The Emergency and Disasters Management Directorate responded to the calls well in time and extinguished the fire by taking effective measures. During the fire extinguish operation Emergency and Disasters Management Directorate saved valuable lives and property. Chairman CDA was also informed that 12 fake calls were also reported. He was informed that Emergency and Disasters Management Directorate was upgraded on modern lines in the aftermath of deadly earth quake of 2005, adding that the rescue workers and the entire staff have been equipped with latest professional techniques after their training in Pakistan and abroad. He added that besides Islamabad, the Emergency and Disasters Management Directorate is now capable of carrying out rescue operations in surrounding areas and Rawalpindi for cooperation activities in case of any untoward incident or natural calamity. He said that presently, Emergency and Disasters Management Directorate has nine (09) fire tenders of 12000 liters water capacity and nine (09) fire tenders of 10000 liters water capacity respectively. There are 10 fire tenders of 7200 liters water capacity and five (05) fire tenders of 1350 liters water capacity, he said. Besides, Emergency and Disasters Management Directorate also has four (04) Bronto with 68 meter skylifts and one (01) 46 meter long Aerial Ladder for multi-storey buildings. Chairman CDA was apprised that rescue and logistic vehicles for rescue operation and logistic support are also available with Emergency and Disasters Management Directorate. He was informed that CDA arrange mock drills, participated by its entire staff and rescue workers in Islamabad on annual basis to assess its rescue and fire extinguish capabilities in line with full professional skills. The purpose of the mock drill and full dress rehearsal is to check the performance and preparedness of machinery and professional skills of firefighters and rescue workers so that their performance could further be improved. Chairman CDA, Maroof Afzal expressed his satisfaction over the performance of Emergency and Disasters Management Directorate and directed for further improvement and up-gradation. He said that due to increase in population, Islamabad is expanding rapidly, adding that the Authority should chalk out a comprehensive plan for establishment of five (05) more fire stations in the city. He directed the concerned formation of the Authority to submit the case for construction of five (05) new fire stations to CDWP of CDA, for approval in its meeting. Chairman CDA said that CDA is the only municipality of the country, which has approved and implemented the “CDA Building Standard for Fire Prevention and Life Safety, 2010”, adding that this helped in decreasing the incidents of fire. He said that fire control services would be extended to different areas of the city and new fire stations would be constructed in Humak Industrial Area, Sector I-9, Sector I-14 and Sector G-11. Chairman CDA, Maroof Afzal urged the firefighters and rescue workers to serve the humanity with devotion and zeal. He asked them to utilize their best professional skills during any untoward incidents or natural calamities to save the precious lives and valuable property of the people. He directed the concerned formations of the Authority to come up with their best suggestions for up-gradation and further improvement of rescue services of Emergency and Disasters Management Directorate so that this directorate could be made the best model institution of the country.
