A member of our Facebook community sent us the following message: Hey guys, just wanted to share with you a bit about myself: I am a 42-year-old single mum of three that became diabetic after I had my first child, who will be 16 soon. when I first was diagnosed I was not surprised because my father had diabetes and sadly passed away with it 14 years ago. I was never a health fanatic and being indigenous my eating habits were far from perfect. I was diagnosed type 2 soon after I had my first child and did not think too much of it because my partner at the time helped me try to keep on track, but I had a ways to go in changing my food intake. two more children later, I had to change if not for my health then my childrens. well after me and my partner split, it spiralled out of control and my readings were showing that and I continued to shrug it off telling myself that I can manage it alright. but after being in hospital over the last six years no less than eight times due to my neglect and hard-headed ways, I have had to pull myself in line and worked hard to get it back to a decent reading. I have now been happy enough to say I can do this and be happy that any healthy choice is a step in the right direction, and I can feel the difference in my mood and attitude when I am on the right track! I know what I have to do and know how to keep on track. I am not the perfect diabetic but I never get upset or feel down for trying all the time to make myself better because I have a goal and am determined to reach it, so I push myself all the time because I know every positive gets me closer to achieving a happy, healthy life.
