A member of the House of Representatives representing Ipokia/Yewa South of Ogun State, Abiodun Akinlade, has been allegedly suspended by his party, the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN). The lawmaker was suspended for alleged anti-party activities, and for fraternizing with the Labour Party in the state. There are, however, unconfirmed speculations that the three-time member of the lower house is eyeing the governorship seat in Ogun State in 2015,hence, his alleged plot to use the platform of Labour Party. The lawmaker was suspended by the ACN executive in his ward, Owode Ward I, Yewa South Local Government Area of Ogun State. A copy of the suspension letter seen by PREMIUM TIMES, dated July 4, and conveying Mr. Akinlade’s suspension, was signed by the party’s ward Vice Chairman, Dauda Afolayan; Secretary, Idowu Azeez; and 21 others. The suspension letter, which was copied to the State ACN Chairman, was copied to Governor Ibikunle Amosun, as well as Mufutau Ajibola (SUBEB Chairman), Yinka Akintomide (Leader, Yewa South Local Government), Daniel Adejobi (Senatorial Chairman), Shafiu Odebiyi (Chairman, Yewa South Local Government) and Festus Durojaye (Leader, Yewa South Local Government). Other allegations against Mr. Akinlade in the suspension order include that he did not participate in any meeting or function of the party since January 6, 2011 when he joined the party. The federal lawmaker was also accused of employing various means to cause division and disaffection among party members. “He has in recent time pasted stickers with Labour Party inscription and made posters without any inscription; that signifies his anti-party intention. “He has moved all his followers to the Labour Party. He employed all means to cause division and disaffection among members of our great party,” the party said. When contacted on telephone, Mr. Akinlade said he was not aware of the suspension by the party, and directed journalists to contact the party chairman of his ward as well as his local government area. When our correspondent contacted the ward party chairman,Yaya Olalekan, he declared that those that authorised the suspension have no powers to do so. He said Mr. Akinlade, as a member of the National Assembly, could not be suspended at the ward or state level, adding that it is the party’s national headquarters that can authorise such a suspension. The party chairman admitted that there are two factions within the party at the ward level, and accused a faction alleged to be loyal to a party chieftain, Mufutau Ajibola, who is opposed to Mr. Akinlade, of being responsible for the alleged suspension.
