A member of the visiting U.S. delegation has stressed the need to strengthen Liberia through human capacity building. Addressing delegates at the at the opening ceremony of the U.S.-Liberia Partnership Dialogue at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Tuesday, Counselor Thomas A. Shannon, head of the U.S. delegation said the dialogue for the first time will introduce the Human Development Working Group. This group is aimed at improving the quality of life of Liberian citizens through health care, education and employment opportunities. Counselor Shannon lauded the first Human Development Working group meeting for what he called their sound decision to focus on education. He added that rebuilding Liberias education system after a protracted civil conflict is important to guaranteeing that the upcoming generation obtains the necessary skills to live productive lives, provide for their families and strength the economy of Liberia. Counselor Shannon described Liberias progress since the end of the civil war in 2003 as significant. He, however, noted that there is still more work to be done, and pledged the U.S. governments commitment to further work with Liberia, to ensure peace and security, boost economic growth, and promote human development. Todays U.S,-Liberia Partnership Dialogue is the second, with the first taking place on May 7, 2013 in Washington D.C.
