A message from Carl.... Family, friends and community— Olivia and I left for Sundance on August 5, 2014. I got home yesterday. Unfortunately, my time here will probably be limited, as I will almost surely need surgery sooner rather than later. I am still getting IV antibiotics to try to hold the infection at bay, but we know that it has invaded bone in my lower vertebrae and disks between the vertebrae. I am currently doing research to try to determine the best place to have surgery. Portland does not really have a Spinal Cord Injury center, whereas there are two of them in Seattle. Olivia and I plan to consult with the surgeons there in order to help us choose the best path forward. Meanwhile, I will consult with my Chinese Herbalist in whom I have a lot of trust. It feels really great to be home. Just watching the birds flitting around in the back yard (while trying to ignore all the work to be done there) is very healing. I slept in my own bed last night. What a joy! I am still grateful for this life, for all of you, for the many, many blessings that I have. It is being a rough patch, but we have all endured those, and used them to grow, so that is my aim. I welcome visitors on a limited basis. Everything is exhausting for me, so I ask that you check with me or Olivia before you come, and limit visits to ½ hour or less. I apologize for that, but we are so focused on my healing that we are pretty distracted from everything else.
