A message from ECCFPD Fire Chief Henderson: Dear ECCFPD - TopicsExpress

A message from ECCFPD Fire Chief Henderson: Dear ECCFPD Resident, The Brentwood Press recently ran an in-depth story on a very important issue (auto-aid) within ECCFPD and beyond. I encourage residents to inform themselves on this issue by reading this piece. Also, I want to take this opportunity to follow up on the above mentioned story and impress upon residents the serious nature of the recent decision by CON Fire to provide fewer engines for calls outside of its coverage area. In my professional opinion, this will adversely impact response times & quality of service, not just within ECCFPD, but every other fire district in Contra Costa County. I believe auto-aid is a critical public-safety issue for residents, fire fighting personnel, public officials etc., and one in which all fire districts should participate. The auto-aid agreement that was cut back earlier this month had been in place since the early 1990’s and had become even more effective since 2005, when automatic vehicle locators were added to the engines. In fact, on June 30 & July 1 of this year, when ECCFPD engaged in simultaneous fires/calls I witnessed auto-aid work very well, as it was originally intended. Simply, I believe our previous auto-aid agreement with CON Fire provided the best safety possible for communities throughout Contra Costa County and I encourage all involved to reconsider the recent decision to reduce the automatic response provided by our neighboring fire district. Respectfully, Hugh Henderson Fire Chief, ECCFPD
