A message from LAKE BRADDOCK SEC Dear Lake Braddock Students, Parents and Guardians, The excitement and anticipation of the first day of school is rising steadily. As you make preparations for the first day of school (and the many days to follow), please take a minute to review the following information concerning transporting your child to school. There are three main means for your child to get to school: ride a school bus, walk to school, or get a ride in a personal vehicle (this includes being dropped off by a parent as well as riding with an older sibling/friend or driving oneself). School buses are provided for all students residing at least 1.5 miles or more from the school. This may change based on the type of road and the amount of traffic on the roads within that 1.5 mile cutoff. Lake Braddock Secondary School staff DO NOT establish the bus schedules, pickup locations/times or drop-off locations/times. Bus schedules may not be posted on public websites. Thus, access to the LBSS bus schedule is through student and/or parent Blackboard (FCPS 24/7). Once you login to Blackboard look for a folder titled: LBSS HS Student Information- 1314 or LBSS MS Student Information- 1314. Each folder contains a tab on the left-hand side labeled “Bus Schedules.” Clicking on the tab will bring you to the orientation bus schedule as well as the regular school day bus schedule. The schedule will be posted at Bruin Blast as well. The regular bus schedule was updated on Wednesday, August 28, 2013 at 3:00 PM. Walking to school is an option used by students who live within the 1.5 mile cutoff as well as students who park in nearby neighborhoods and then walk. Please remember, Lake Braddock Secondary School does not support students parking in neighborhoods surrounding the school. Local homeowner’s associations are responsible for enforcing parking restrictions in the neighborhoods. Students who walk to school must pass through the school parking lot in order to access the building. There are marked crosswalks for this purpose and please use them. It is incumbent upon drivers to be aware of their surroundings and even more so when it could be a student. Use of a personal vehicle to drop-off in the morning or pick-up in the afternoon results in an increase in traffic and distracted drivers- whether parents, siblings or friends- on school grounds and poses the greatest threat to student safety at Lake Braddock Secondary School. There are two- and only two- designated Kiss & Ride drop-off/pick-up points: the entrance from Burke Lake Road is the primary Kiss & Ride and the entrance at Raintree Rd. and Lake Braddock Dr. near Exit #3 is the secondary Kiss & Ride. The back parking lot is not a student drop-off area and will only be available to LBSS staff and designated school buses. There will be no drop-off access to this lot from the front of the building or from the gate at Mersea Ct. and Lake Braddock Dr. Please plan your trip accordingly. To expedite student drop-off, please keep the following in mind: •Everyone is in a hurry. Therefore, do not cut into a drop-off lane. •Your child should be ready to exit once you stop in the drop-off area. Storing belongings in the trunk of a car slows down the entire K&R. •At the main entrance, three vehicles may drop-off at one time. •At Exit #3, 10 - 15 vehicles can drop-off at the curb at one time. ◦Please note that changes have been made to the drop-off route at Exit #3 (see attachment at the bottom of the email). ◦Leaving this drop-off area will require a right turn onto Lake Braddock Dr. A legal U-turn can be made at Cotherstone Ct. to return to Burke Lake Rd. •Be aware of your surroundings…other vehicles or persons may have neared your vehicle as you were dropping off. The safety of each student is our priority. Thank you in advance for following our procedures.
