A message from the leader of the nationals. " Dear friends, Those who forget the past are doomed to repeat it. The guy the public saw through as a hollow man and whose colleagues publicly pilloried as ‘a psychopath’, ‘untrustworthy’, ‘chaotic’ and ‘not having Labor values’, is back. Last week’s events prove that Labor has learnt nothing. It is because of the Labor Party’s penchant for political assassinations, shifty backroom deals and putting themselves above the people that Australians have lost all trust in Labor. Rather than resuscitate the government’s electoral pulse, Labor’s Kevin-Julia-Kevin revolving door approach to the Office of Prime Minister will leave regional Australia cold. We have been ignored by both. When Julia Gillard was Prime Minister her idea of an expedition to the country was to go to Western Sydney. Kevin Rudd spent more time travelling around the world than in regional Australia. Regardless of the figure head, Labor is rotten and split at its core. Its preoccupation with self-interest makes it incapable of governing in the national interest, now pulling a prime ministerial switcheroo to save their own necks. As of today, the carbon tax ramps up $24.15 to slug all Australian families, particularly those who live in the regions. For a year Australian families and businesses have been paying a $23 per tonne carbon tax – more than five times the rate in Europe and much more comprehensive in its coverage. In New Zealand the effective rate is only 75c a tonne – 32 times lower than Australia. Families and businesses in regional communities already pay over the odds when it comes to the cost of living, and the carbon tax just makes life harder again. And there’s more to come. If Labor is re-elected, the carbon tax will go up again next year. But it comes with an extra kick in the guts, especially for regional Australians. For the first time, it will apply to road transport. Everything we truck into regional communities will be more expensive and disproportionately disadvantaged given the greater distances involved. Equally, it makes everything we truck out, especially our exports, more expensive and less competitive. Enough is enough! What regional Australians are telling us is they need a stable government, strong leadership and a clear direction for this nation’s future. We will back our miners, farmers, manufacturers, electricity generators, tourism operators and small businesses. Our plan is a recipe for more jobs, better jobs and greater job security. Putting regional Australia at the heart of a national economic recovery is not only good for the regions, it’s good for the nation. Regards, Warren Truss MP Leader of The Nationals"
