A “minority” recruitment and retention program versus a diversity initiative Tacitly, the objective of most “minority” recruitment and retention programs is the find people who happen to have a diverse racial or gender background, but are otherwise indistinguishable from the majority of the people at the institution. In other words, most minority recruiters are not interested in changing their institutional culture, they are interested in the “minority” changing their culture to fit the institution. Such programs also tend to problematize the people they claim to want to recruit, by operating under the assumption that the institutions inability to recruit and retain “minorities” is due to the shortcomings of the minority. If you are like me, and often have institutions and organizations asking you to help them find more qualified minorities, ask them, “Why does your company [or school] want more minorities?” You’ll be surprised at how difficult it is for them to answer that question. - Ivory A.
