A mobile dental hygiene program designed to serve children in Jessamine County, Kentucky schools, is being severely underutilized. Paid for by a 1-year $160,000 grant to the local health department, the program enables a dental hygienist and dental assistant to spend 2 weeks at each school in the county providing the full-range of dental hygiene services—including assessment, cleaning, application of fluoride varnish and sealants, and oral health education. Program administrators have suggested a variety of reasons for low participation, from children not bringing the permission slips home to parent misconceptions about the health department.
