A model society? (Or, how the Dutch did the right things ...) In the 17th century wages in the Netherlands were higher than anywhere else. It also had a welfare system that astonished foreign visitors ad which took better care of the poor than anywhere else in the world. The crime-rate was low ...The status of Dutch women shocked the French and the British. Dutch women had jobs and showed little subservience to men. Literacy rates were the best in Europe and England. (From p. 27 of the Introduction to E.M. Beekmans translation of *The Ambonese Herbal*, written in Dutch by G.E. Rumphius, a major scientist working in the second half of the 17th century. Published by Yale University Press, 2011.)
