A mom writes I decided we needed a second dog three years ago because our 5 year old Labrador, Callie, was not into me. She loved my husband and sons and everyone else on the planet, and she didn’t mind if I took her for walks, or if I fed her, but she looked suspicious if I tried to pet her and she definitely didn’t like to cuddle or hang out with me (like her predecessor, Katie.) “Give her time,” said my husband, “she’ll warm up to you,” but 5 years, in my book, was enough. I remembered that my vet’s friendly and loyal dog came from a breeder in Sebastopol that raised dogs with sweet temperaments, and that many of them went on to be autism therapy dogs. What could be more perfect? I called the breeder while my husband and sons were away for the weekend at Lake Tahoe. Callie hung out at the window waiting for them and ignoring me. By the time they came home, I had learned that there was a very sweet 12 week old puppy who had been trained to be a therapy dog for a boy with autism on the east coast. It hadn’t worked out, and the puppy was flying back the next day and might be available.
