A month ago I headed to Alaska for three weeks, over solstice. The land of the midnight sun in early summer is a raw and glorious place, and it is pure surreality to be able to set out for a mountain hike at 10 pm and lose yourself in magic hour... for hours on end. At the beginning of the trip I picked up a new gizmo, a Phantom 2 with a GoPro, and started taking it with me on the evening hikes, planning to get some practice on it and test whether its could look cinematic enough to use in an upcoming film project. For such a little thing, I was skeptical Id be able to get anything of much out of it, but after checking out the footage, I was pretty blown away at how beautiful it could be made to look. Its no Cineflex, but its amazing nonetheless the kinds of images you can now pull in with a little machine that can fit easily in a pack. Its a brave new world for the backcountry cinematographer... Anyhow, all my obsessive carousing around in the beauty of magic hour while testing (the truth is that its just damn fun to fly) turned into this, a little Sturgefilm one-off! https://vimeo/101584491
