A month ago I went and auditioned for American Stage Theatre Company. I had signed up for a slot as soon as the auditions were announced, despite (or perhaps due to) the very vocal discussion I was having about the artistic director of the company at the time. And while I assumed he would be present for the audition, I can honestly say I hadnt considered that he would be the only one present. I wasnt entirely sure what to expect when the door closed behind me and Mr. Olson and I were alone, face-to-face. We introduced ourselves, and what followed was an exceedingly pleasant conversation in spite of the given circumstances. We talked about the difficulty of communicating tone and sentiment in a written medium, he owned up to certain comments that were made, and I realized that the man seated in front of me was a fellow human who was, in all likelihood, trying to do his best. We shook hands, I auditioned, and then I drove home. Before we parted ways, Mr. Olson agreed to continuing our dialogue and when I returned home I had one new friend request on facebook. Now, the news of his resignation has stirred a lot of mixed emotions in me. I was surprised to hear he was leaving, but am happy that hes found work with such a prestigious organization. Im conflicted as to whether I should feel partially responsible. Im both excited and worried about the future of American Stage. Todd Olson, godspeed on your latest endeavor and thank you for taking the time to talk with me last month. I wish you and your family nothing but the best. Safe travels, and I hope youll keep in touch.
