A more recent acquisition, obtained the old fashioned way...pawing through the stacks of Picasso coffee table books at my local used book store. Richard Schmid Paints Landscapes from 1975 Watson/Guptill. They also published a similar book on his figurative work which I dont own. This is a very good book, written before the artist had reached the acceptance and popularity he now enjoys. Straightforward advice and his own common sense solutions to the problems of plein air painting before the term was popularized. A quote:I am concerned with accuracy and detail in the block-in stage because I believe that a sketch can be superbly loose and free-yet entirely accurate at the same time. To me there is no valid reason why brushstrokes cannot be spontaneous and lively, and still be the right length, shape, and color in every stage of painting-particlarly in the beginning. (p. 48). I believe I picked this up for under $12. Check out the shots of his painting gear, especially the easel made from a surveyors tripod.
