A morning meditation on an excerpt from todays readings: Now that you have been freed from sin and have become slaves of God, the benefit that you have leads to sanctification, and its end is eternal life. For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. ~Rom 6:22-23 This can be a difficult passage for people with modern sensibilities; we tend to resist the idea of being a servant or a slave to anything. Because of this inherent bias, it may be helpful in this instance to think of slavery to God as freedom for righteousness: that is, the freedom to do good. Whereas in the past, humans were slaves to sin, they have since been freed from that slavery and are now able to choose what is good over what is evil. This freedom comes through Gods grace in the form of Christs sacrifice and through the presence of the Holy Spirit in our lives. Christs Passion, death, and resurrection free us from the bondage of sin, and the Gifts of the Holy Spirit empower us to know and choose what is truly good. In this sense, we are slaves, because knowing what is good entails being obliged to act accordingly, but it is a very attractive form of slavery.
