A movie channel has been doing a Humphrey Bogart month, great chance to see the actor in a wide variety of films over his career. These are the movies on the top of my Bogart list, in order of greatitude: The African Queen The Treasure of the Sierra Madre Beat the Devil The Caine Mutiny Casablanca Greatness on this list refers to Bogarts performances, although all of these are great movies in their own right over and above his work. Bogart is an icon of film, a well known name even a half century after his death ... but even so, I consider him to be an underrated movie star. His talent exceeded his ability to attract enormous popularity, a thing quite rare in cinema. He was loved, but he was good way beyond his fame. My end of year gift to you, five movies worth watching at any time, and worth watching again and again.
