A new Gallup poll revealed that Americans are finally starting to realize the dangers of soda. 63% say that they actively try to avoid soda in their diet. This is a significant increase from 2002, when only 41% were trying to avoid soda. Soda Consumption Falls to Lowest Level in Decades: The 75-billion dollar a year soda industry reached its greatest heights in the US during the 1980s and 1990s. As people drank more and more soda, the rates of obesity and diabetes soared. In 1998, Americans were drinking an average of 56 gallons of soda per year! Besides obesity and diabetes, a new animal study suggests that sugary beverages may be particularly damaging to the brains of adolescents. Diet soda does not contain sugar, but that certainly doesn’t make it a better choice than regular soda. Multiple studies confirm the health risks associated with artificial sweeteners, including carcinogenicity. When soda is consumed, your pancreas rapidly begins to create insulin in response to the sugar. A 20-ounce bottle of cola contains the equivalent of 16 teaspoons of sugar in the form of high fructose corn syrup. The rise of blood sugar is quite rapid and contributes to insulin resistance. About 45 minutes after drinking a sugary soda, dopamine production is increased so much that it is a similar response to shooting heroin. After 60 minutes, you’ll start to have a blood sugar crash, which may tempt you to reach for another sweet snack or beverage. The subsequent insulin resistance from drinking sugary sodas, can lead to many chronic disease, from diabetes to cancer.
